The Fight Over College Athlete Compensation (NCAA)

Since 2021, college athletes have enjoyed a golden age with lucrative name, image, and likeness (NIL) deals, high-end facilities, and increasing perks. However, the NCAA and Power 5 conferences have been lobbying Congress to restore amateurism, spending over $15 million on lobbying and PR firms since 2019. Their goals include obtaining an antitrust exemption, ensuring athletes are not classified as employees, and preempting conflicting state laws. (Source:FOS)

This campaign could undermine athlete unionization and current NIL rights, but many athletes are unaware of these efforts. Despite their powerful lobbying, the campaign faces resistance from lawmakers, though future political shifts could favor the NCAA’s agenda.
