NHL Approves Coyotes' Transfer to Utah: A New Era for Hockey

According to Alex Silverman of the Sport Business Journal, the NHL approved the transfer of the Arizona Coyotes to a new franchise in Utah, bought by Ryan Smith. This hybrid of relocation and expansion cost between $1.2-1.3 billion to Smith Entertainment Group. The new team will debut at the Delta Center in October.

In Arizona, Alex Meruelo retains the Coyotes brand with the option to reactivate the franchise if he builds a new arena. This decision avoids a forced sale of the franchise. Gary Bettman welcomed the franchise to Utah.

In Utah, the team is moving into a 14,000-seat arena, aiming for major renovations in the future. Smith also plans to acquire land for a larger project. The region, although small, shows strong economic growth and a passion for sports.
